In South Africa, many of these requirements are guided by the Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA), Trackless Mobile Machinery (TMM) regulations, mine-specific risk assessments, and approved engineering standards.

• ROPS (Roll Over Protection Systems)
• FOPS (Falling Object Protection Systems)
• HALO Systems
• Underground vehicle safety modifications

must follow approved designs, certified mounting points, material specifications, and structural engineering requirements. These systems are specifically designed and tested to perform under extreme conditions such as vehicle rollovers, falling object impacts, and harsh mining environments. 

In many mining environments, vehicles are also required to comply with site-specific standards from mining groups such as Anglo American. These standards often define:

• Approved safety systems
• Vehicle heights and configurations
• Lighting and visibility requirements
• Mounting specifications
• Safety accessory placement
• Structural protection systems
• Inspection and certification criteria 

This means that modifying or redesigning approved Mine-Spec systems outside of certified specifications could:

• Cause vehicles to fail mine inspections
• Prevent site access approvals
• Void engineering certifications
• Compromise occupant safety
• Create warranty and liability risks
• Result in non-compliance with mine regulations

In simple terms:
Just because something can physically be changed does not mean it safely or legally should be.

That is why products like ROPS and FOPS systems have far less flexibility for visual or structural customisation compared to products such as Field Service Canopies or Toolboxes.

Even then, customisation on canopies and storage systems still has practical limits. There are factors that must always be considered during the design process such as:

• Operational practicality
