ROPS, FOPS & HALO™
VEHICLE PROTECTION SYSTEMS
PROTECTION STARTS WITH UNDERSTANDING THE RISK.
Vehicles operating in mining, construction and other demanding environments can face hazards
that are very different from everyday road use.
TAURUS Fitment Centre supplies and fits ROPS, FOPS and HALO™ protection systems for vehicle
applications where rollover and falling-object risks need to be addressed.
Our team works with the vehicle, operating environment and applicable site requirements to help
determine the appropriate protection system.
From internal and external ROPS through to combined ROPS/FOPS solutions and HALO™ systems,
we provide professional fitment from our workshop in Benoni, Gauteng.

THE DIFFERENCE
ROPS, FOPS OR HALO™ — WHAT DOES YOUR VEHICLE REQUIRE?
These systems address different risks, and choosing the right one starts with understanding the environment in which the vehicle operates.
ROPS — ROLLOVER PROTECTIVE STRUCTURE
ROPS is designed to provide a protective structure around the vehicle’s occupant space in the event of a rollover. ISO 3471 specifies laboratory test and performance requirements for metallic ROPS used on applicable earth-moving machinery.
FOPS — FALLING OBJECT PROTECTIVE STRUCTURE
FOPS is designed to protect operators from falling objects. ISO 3449 specifies laboratory tests and performance requirements for FOPS used on applicable ride-on earth-moving machines.
HALO™ — ROLLOVER OCCUPANT PROTECTION SYSTEM
HALO™ is a specific rollover occupant protection system developed by Safety Engineering International. Its design integrates reinforcement with the vehicle’s existing structure to help maintain occupant survival space during a rollover. HALO™ is therefore a particular ROPS solution rather than a separate type of hazard protection like FOPS.
INTERNAL ROPS
A ROPS structure installed within the vehicle’s cabin, providing rollover protection while forming part of the vehicle’s occupant protection system.
EXTERNAL ROPS
A ROPS structure positioned outside the passenger compartment, providing rollover protection without placing the main protective structure inside the cabin.
FALLING OBJECT PROTECTIVE STRUCTURE
A protective structure designed to provide the operator or occupants with protection from falling objects. FOPS is particularly relevant to vehicles operating in environments where falling or suspended objects present a potential hazard.
FULL ROPS/FOPS SYSTEM
A combined protection system addressing both rollover and falling-object risks where the vehicle’s application and risk assessment require both forms of protection.
HALO™ ROPS
The HALO™ system is a rollover occupant-protection system designed to reinforce the vehicle’s existing structure and help maintain occupant survival space during a rollover.
WHERE ARE ROPS & FOPS USED?
PROTECTION FOR VEHICLES OPERATING WHERE THE RISKS CHANGE.
MINING
Mining vehicles can operate around uneven terrain, heavy machinery, falling-object hazards and rollover risks. South African mine regulations specifically require mines to address the risks associated with overturning and falling objects on trackless mobile machines, with ROPS and FOPS fitted where the mine’s risk assessment requires them.
ROPS, FOPS and HALO™ systems can therefore form part of a wider Mine-Spec vehicle configuration alongside other site-specific safety and operational requirements.
CONSTRUCTION
Construction sites bring their own combination of mobile plant, uneven terrain, moving equipment and overhead hazards.
The Construction Regulations require protective structures on construction vehicles and mobile plant to protect operators from falling material or being crushed if the vehicle or plant overturns.
INDUSTRIAL & SPECIALISED VEHICLES
Other specialised environments may also require additional occupant protection depending on the vehicle, operating conditions and identified hazards.
Where a vehicle operates outside normal road conditions, the right protection should be considered as part of the overall vehicle specification rather than as an afterthought.
WHY TAURUS?
SAFETY EQUIPMENT IS ONLY AS GOOD AS THE SYSTEM IT FORMS PART OF.
ROPS and FOPS don’t exist in isolation. The structure needs to work with the vehicle, its occupants, other equipment
and the environment in which it operates. At TAURUS Fitment Centre, we approach these installations as part
of the wider vehicle configuration.
That means considering:
THE SYSTEM
ROPS, FOPS, HALO™ or a combination where appropriate.
THE VEHICLE
Make, model, configuration and existing equipment.
THE APPLICATION
Mining, construction, field service or another specialised operating environment.
THE RISK
The hazards identified through
the applicable site or vehicle risk assessment.
THE FITMENT
Professional installation with attention to the vehicle and the requirements of the selected system.
Our focus is practical and straightforward: understand what the vehicle needs to do, understand the applicable requirements, and fit the appropriate protection system.
